3 More Herbs for Making Gourmet Drinks
Last week, we published an article about 5 herbs you should have on hand for making cocktails: mint, rosemary, basil, sage, and cilantro. These three herbs are wonderful additions to any home bar (or, rather, herb garden). However, these are the basics. There are plenty of more herbs out there to try. Here are a few of our favorite herbs that are a little off the beaten path – or garden row, if you will.
Angelica is a little known herb for the average bartender. Great bartenders, on the other hand, love this in a cocktail. Once you start making drinks with angelica, you might find that you love it, too. This herb has a remarkable musky and earthy taste and aroma that makes it unlike anything else. It pairs well with fruit, offering a nice contrast without completely polarizing the contents of your beverage! Ingredients like angelica are hard to find at the grocery store (fresh and high in quality, at least), so we recommend growing your own.
Angelica is quite easy to grow, requiring a little shade, cool climate, and moisture. Angelicas are biennials, so they will only flower for two seasons before dying. (That being said, they seed themselves well.)
#2 Kaffir Lime Leaves
Kaffir lime leaves have a floral and citrus taste that’s somewhere between lemon and limes. If you want to make gourmet drinks that will mystify your guests, then use kaffir lime leaves. Kaffir lime leaves provide a unique, non-traditional way to infuse your cocktails with citrus flavors.
Tarragon has a very distinct woodsy and licorice flavor that you don’t come across too often in beverages. It’s a very subtle flavor, but incredibly distinct. A little bit goes a long way with this beverage ingredient. Tarragon goes very well with gin and lime, presenting a new way to do the gin and tonic.
