Hosting an outdoor party this summer? If so, there’s no better entertainment than a few classic watermelon contests. Check out three of our favorite watermelon contests. Everything you need to know (including some fantastic watermelon-flavored drink recipes) is below:
#1 Watermelon Seed-Spitting Contest
We have to pay the watermelon its due respect by starting with the seed-spitting contest. Next to baseball, this could be the most popular athletic event of the summer. (Or, maybe that’s taking it a little too far.) To do a seed spitting contest right, competitors have to get their own seeds out of the watermelon.
#2 Watermelon Eating Contest
If you’re going to gorge yourself in an eating contest, there’s practically no healthier, non-dangerous food to do it with than the watermelon. So, skip the hotdog eating contest, and have a watermelon-eating contest instead. (Looking for some strategic advice? Team members from Amoretti suggest chewing and swallowing the seeds. Don’t waste time with any of that seed-spitting silliness.)
#3 Greased Watermelon Polo
Have access to a lake or pool? If so, then the greased watermelon contest is the ultimate in watermelon “sports.” Grease up the watermelon with petroleum jelly or shortening and throw it in the pool. Divide up your melon-athletes into two teams, and have them grab, slide, push, and toss the watermelon from one side of the pool to the other. When the watermelon gets to one end of the pool, the team scores a point. Play to whatever score you want.
(Note: pool-owners are quite divided on whether or not petroleum jelly and/or shortening is bad for their pool. Some are fine with it, while others wouldn’t dare! If you’re a pool owner, do your own research on this subject!)
