4 More Health Benefits of Drinking Coffee

Coffee has many health benefits besides just getting you going in the morning.

Coffee has many health benefits besides just getting you going in the morning.

Yesterday we covered three reasons why drinking coffee might actually be good for you. It seems coffee can get lumped together with some negative health conditions like stress and high blood pressure (the latter of which, by the way, has no scientific grounds). So, we thought it worthwhile to highlight some more of the health benefits that are associated with drinking coffee.

So, grab a cup of your favorite roast, a delicious coffee syrup to bring out all the flavors, and settle in for a little Coffee Health 101…

#4 Coffee Lowers Risk of Alzheimer’s

In 2009, researchers in Finland and Sweden released the results of a study that followed 1,400 people for roughly 20 years. Participants that drank 3-5 cups per day were 65% less likely to develop dementia or Alzheimer’s disease (compared to non-drinkers or occasional coffee drinkers).

#5 More Coffee = Less Risk of Stroke (for Women)

2009 turned out to be a good year of pro-coffee medical studies. Another study of 83,700 nurses was released in 2009, demonstrating a 20% lower risk of stroke in women who drank two or more cups of coffee per day. Even more interesting is the fact that this health benefit was true across the board, regardless of other health conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes, and high cholesterol.

#6 Coffee Reduces Heart Arrhythmias

That heart-pounding feeling you get after downing the second cup in 15 minutes? Well, it could actually be helping your heart learn how to handle arrhythmias. A study of 130k individuals found that people who drank 1-3 cups of coffee every day were 20% less likely to be hospitalized for arrhythmia.

#7 Coffee Reduces the Risk of Death

Death may be unpreventable, but you can lower your risk by drinking coffee, according to one study. Between 1995 and 2008, the National Institutes of Health found that people who had just one daily cup reduced their risk of death by 6%. Bump it to five cups per day, and see a risk reduction of 12%!
