This cocktail is wonderfully refreshing for a hot summer evening.

“What makes a good ‘smash’ cocktail recipe?” we asked ourselves a few days ago. As we got to thinking (and researching), we came up with a few criteria:

  • It has to have muddled mint. This is at the very core of “smash-ness.”
  • It should probably have whiskey of some sort.
  • It should be fairly short and simple.
  • It definitely needs some kind of tart bite.
  • It should use sugar – instead of simple syrup.
Maple Syrup

Next time you create a special breakfast for your family, try Amoretti Maple Syrup Iced Tea. We don’t think you’ll be disappointed.

Check, check, check, check, and… check. We met all five of our criteria in creating our newest drink recipe, the Amoretti Maple Bourbon Blackberry Smash. Be sure to try this cocktail recipe soon while fresh blackberries are still in season. If you have the chance to pick wild blackberries, go for it. Wild blackberries tend to be more tart than farm-grown ones, which is perfect for a drink recipe like this one. (If the blackberries you use are especially sweet, then you may want to consider adding a squeeze of lemon to this drink recipe.)

Add bourbon, white sugar, and mint leaves to a julep glass. Muddle thoroughly. (The coarseness of the white sugar should help release some of the flavor in the mint leaves.) Add the blackberries and muddle. Add the Amoretti Premium Maple Syrup. Strain liquid into a mixing glass, leaving the blackberries and mint leaves in the julep glass. Fill the julep glass with crushed ice so that the berries and mint are at the bottom. Pour the bourbon and Amoretti Premium Maple Syrup back into the julep glass over the crushed ice. Garnish with a fresh sprig of mint. Enjoy!

This cocktail is unlike anything we’ve ever tried before. It’s wonderfully refreshing for a hot summer evening. But, at the same time, it has a dark sweetness to it that reminds us of October and November. Perhaps it’s the maple syrup? Maybe it’s just good bourbon? For us, this cocktail is the perfect middle ground – a drink of the moment that anticipates the future.
