Tired of the same old cup of Joe? If you’re ready to mix things up in your daily routine, we’ve got a coffee drink recipe that will blow you away. It’s called the “undertow,” popularized as a “secret drink” at everyone’s favorite nautically-inspired Big Box coffee shop. We first wrote about the undertow back in April in a blog post that breaks down the steps necessary in making the gourmet drink.

Today, however, we’re turning our attention back to the undertow – this time with a unique drink recipe in mind. Check out our Salted Caramel Reverse Undertow….

Salted Caramel Reverse Undertow

Amoretti Premium Crema di Salted Caramel Syrup

Amoretti Premium Crema di Salted Caramel Syrup

Ingredients:

Directions:

Add one pump of Amoretti Premium Crema di Salted Caramel Syrup to a small mug or heat-resistant glass. Add one shot of espresso to the glass and coffee syrup. Swirl the two ingredients until the coffee syrup is dissolved. Insert a bar spoon upside down in the drinking glass and slowly pour a dash of cream over the back of the spoon so that the cream sinks to the bottom of the glass.

Why Reverse Undertow?

In a traditional undertow, the beverage is layered (or “built”) in the following order: drink syrup, cream/milk, and espresso. This order of ingredients allows for the perfect sip: hot espresso on top, carried by cool cream beneath. However, Amoretti Premium Crema di Salted Caramel Syrup and other thick, creamy coffee syrups won’t dissolve well if they don’t come into direct contact with the espresso. These syrups are rich and decadent, and they need some heat to really loosen up!

With a reverse undertow (order: drink syrup, espresso, then cream/milk), the problem is solved! The heat of the espresso loosens the coffee syrup so that its full flavor comes out. By carefully pouring your cream over the back of a spoon, most of it should still sink to the bottom.
