Enjoy homemade italian sodas with great flavor & few calories.

An Italian soda is a soft drink made from carbonated water and flavored syrup. Italian sodas can be fruit flavored, citrus flavored (a blood orange Italian soda is absolutely the best you will ever drink!), nut flavored, liqueur flavored, or even the flavor of desserts such as tiramisu, tres leches, or crème brulee. If there is a flavored syrup available, you can make an Italian soda out of it. If you add cream or half & half to the finished product, you then have an Italian cream soda.

Italian sodas are not really Italian, although they did originate in the North Beach neighborhood of San Francisco, California, which is San Francisco’s Little Italy, in the 1920s. Eventually, the idea of Italian sodas was discovered by coffeehouses all across the country and the idea just grew and grew.

The key to a good Italian soda is a quality syrup, and Amoretti syrups are the best on the market. As we said, Amoretti Premium Syrups are richer and more concentrated than any competitive brand, so we have been experimenting with the SodaStream© Home Beverage Maker here in the Amoretti Test Kitchens to ascertain the best mix of Amoretti syrup and carbonated water to create the best tasting Italian soda. We have gone through an awful lot of syrups, and more carbonating bottles than we care to count, to ensure our customers get the best tasting Italian soda, regardless of which flavor syrup they use. 

Fruit Flavored Italian Sodas

After infusing several bottles of carbonated water created from the SodaStream and many sample tastings by Amoretti tasters, we have determined that the combination of carbonated water and fruit flavors to make the perfect Italian soda in a fruit or citrus flavor is 6 pumps of syrup in a 1 liter bottle of carbonated water. That would be approximately 50ml of syrup.

Nut Flavored Italian Sodas

Amoretti nut flavors must be a little more subtle than our fruit flavors because after much trial and error, our tasters have decided that 8 pumps of the nut flavors are the perfect amount for a 1 liter bottle of carbonated water.

Dessert Flavored Italian Sodas

Like our nut flavors, our dessert flavors are a bit subtle, so again we recommend 8 pumps of a dessert flavor, such as tres leches, tiramisu and crème brulee, in a 1 liter bottle of carbonated water.

Italian Cream Sodas

Not to be confused with traditional cream sodas such as IBC or A&W brands, an Italian cream soda is an Italian soda with a layer of cream floating on the surface. To turn any Italian soda into an Italian cream soda, pour your favorite Italian soda into a glass half filled with ice, slowly pour two ounces of heavy cream or half & half over the back of a tablespoon onto the surface of the Italian soda, and add a straw. Stir the cream into the soda with the straw just before drinking it.

IMPORTANT!

Be sure to check for milk in the ingredients list of the syrup you are going to use to make Italian sodas. The proteins in dairy products tend to cause excessive foaming when added to the sparkling water.

A Final Note

One thing we really need to mention concerning all Italian sodas made with the SodaStream© Home Beverage Maker. When you follow the instructions provided with the SodaStream© for carbonating the water it becomes very volatile, so be extra careful when adding the syrup to the carbonated water. If the syrup is added too quickly, the soda water will bubble up and over the top of the bottle, creating quite a mess.
