Does Tea Expire? Ask the Drink Syrup Experts

“Does tea expire? Is it possible for tea to expire?” These are questions we hear from time to time from Amoretti customers. Sure, we don’t actually sell tea, but as the drink syrup authority, we try to make sure we know a good deal about tea and coffee, too!

The short of it is, no, tea does not expire. However, there are many different types of tea, storage conditions, and other factors that play into this question. Let’s run through some of the fundamentals about tea and expiration dates…

Does Tea Get Stale?

Yes, tea absolutely can become stale. Black teas and other teas that have been heavily oxidized are less susceptible to taking on a stale taste. Green teas and other lightly oxidized teas are far more likely to acquire a stale taste if they sit around in your cabinet for several months (or years!).

The blood orange can be traced back as far as the 18th century in the Mediterranean region.

In order to prevent your teas from going stale, you can do the following:

  • Drink your tea, especially green tea, shortly after you buy it. If you aren’t going to need or want the tea in the next six months, then you’re probably better off not buying it. Only buy teas that you will have the time and will to drink in the next few months.
  • Store your tea in airtight, dry, and cool/room temperature areas. This will help prevent mold, exposure to the elements, etc.

Some Teas Need Time

Did you know that some teas are actually preferred when they’ve sat around for a few years? Some oolongs and other heavily roasted teas, for example, need a couple of years to mellow before they should be consumed. This waiting period allows the intense roasted flavors to subside.

The Bottom Line on Tea Expiration

Essentially, it boils down to this: if you store tea properly, it will never expire. However, some teas will not taste as good after a couple years as they did when you first bought them. Store your tea properly and drink it quickly, and you’ll be all right!
