How to Throw a Cocktail Party (Part 1/2)
The word “cocktail” is just a hair over 215 years old. Its first use was recorded on March 20, 1798 in The Morning Post and Gazetteer in London, England. Somehow, the world had bestowed this great gift upon the people of London, yet no one had the sense to celebrate with a party until May 1917 in St. Louis, Missouri.
At noon on Sunday, Mrs. Julius S. Walsh Jr. invited about 50 guests to her home for an hour-long cocktail party, which led up to a 1:00 pm lunch. The age of the cocktail party was born. (And now the Mrs. Walsh’s home is the residence of the local archbishop.)
If you’re looking to throw a fantastic cocktail party that will rival those of the Jazz Age, then it all starts with invitations…
Creating Cocktail Party Invitations
Invitations can be as simple or as elaborate as you choose to make them. We’ll assume that you won’t be doing a full bar for your cocktail party, in which case we recommend having a themed or signature bar (more on that below). Let your guests know either (a) the general theme or (b) the specific signature drinks that will be offered. If you intend to have guests contribute their favorite spirit, liqueur, or bitters, then make that clear in your invitation!
Ideas for Stocking the Bar at Your Cocktail Party
Buying a full bar for your cocktail party is most likely infeasible. Instead, choose to have either a themed bar or a signature drink bar. A themed bar would focus on a particular spirit or type of cocktail. Or a theme might be “beach drinks,” where you could serve Mai Tais, Piña Coladas, and daiquiris.
A signature drink bar, on the other hand, would feature a few of your favorite drinks (or popular cocktail recipes). With this approach, drinks don’t have to be related to one another in any way. If you’re inviting a large group with many different tastes, then this might be the best way to approach your cocktail party.
