A perfectly crafted Amaretto Sour is something everyone should know how to make, as it packs a sour kick with mild sweetness. It’s almost like candy … liquid candy, that is!
This Italian drink mixes well with any occasion, as its flavor is perfect for a fun evening with friends, but also maintains its reputation as a go-to standard in cocktail recipes. And if you’re familiar with the Amoretti blog, you know that we like to create spin offs of the best classic concoctions. Today we’ll share with you our spin on a combination of an Apple Martini and an Amoretti Sour, the Amoretti Sour Apple Martini!
But first, we’re going to give you a quick linguistic lesson…
- “Amaretto” stems from the Italian word “amaro,” which means “bitter.” This aptly describes the somewhat bitter taste that bites through any sweetness present in the Amaretto sour.
- While Amaretto is different from amaro, the conflation of the Italian words “amaro” and “amore” – both of which mean “love” – explain the drink’s association with romance.
While many drinks can be easily traced to their origin, the Amaretto Sour is one of the more difficult martini recipes to track. Though the validity is questionable, popular Italian legend says that a Saronno church commissioned one of Leonardo da Vinci’s students to repaint the sanctuary in 1525.
Since the church was dedicated to the Virgin Mary, the artist needed a female model so that he could more vividly paint the Madonna. The pupil saw inspiration in a widowed innkeeper and used her as the basis for his painting. To thank him, the widow created an original concoction by steeping apricot kernels in brandy.
Fortunately, drink mixes and refined martini recipes make it easier to make a spin-off of an Amaretto Sour today. Below is our spin on the classic Italian recipe that has made the Amaretto Sour one of the most popular drink mixes in history, which uses combines the classic flavor of Amaretto with our very own Amoretti Sour Apple Martini Cocktail Mix.
