Nearly 26 million Americans (that’s 8.3% of the population) have diabetes, according to the American Diabetes Association. Sadly, this disease often comes about as a result of poor dietary and/or exercise choices. If you are struggling with diabetes, you might feel disheartened about the foods that you can and cannot eat. We aren’t doctors, but we do have some dietary ideas that could help…

Diabetes & Alcohol

We all know that alcohol turns to sugar once your body processes it. While you clearly want to keep your sugar level down, you don’t necessarily have to eliminate sugar entirely from your diet. If you’re eating a healthy sugar-free diet (and have your doctor’s permission), then the occasional cocktail probably isn’t going to hurt you.

However, what does hurt is all of the processed sugar that’s found in most cocktail mixes and drink syrups. Here’s where we can help… We’re proud to carry 11 different sugar-free liquid flavorings that you can use in making cocktails. Avoid the sugary stuff at your local bar and opt for something that’s delicious and doesn’t use artificial ingredients in order to achieve its great taste. Looking for a recommendation? Diabetes & Coffee

As we shared in our last blog post, coffee contains magnesium and chromium, which help control insulin, thereby regulating your blood sugar. If you enjoy having a little extra flavor with your coffee, then try one of our top-selling sugar-free flavorings, Amoretti Premium Sugar Free French Vanilla Flavoring. This delicious sugar-free liquid flavorings uses natural flavor to produce its remarkably rich taste.

Diabetes & Eating Habits

Here are a few more of our favorite diabetic tips:

  • Make sure you’re eating the right amount of calories for your weight and activity level. Many studies have shown that losing 5-10% of your body weight can contribute to the reversal of diabetes. Weight loss starts with proper eating and exercise habits.
  • Enjoy a colorful plate of food. Lots of fruits and vegetables (while paying attention to sugar content) is a good starting point!
  • Avoid overdoing it on the animal protein. Too much protein can cause insulin resistance.
