What’s the Big Deal With Raw Milk?
We all know these people. Maybe you’re one of them. Like the rest of us, they shop at grocery stores, farmer’s markets, and make the occasional bulk purchases at wholesale grocery outlets. But when it comes to milk, they get a little shifty-eyed. You can see a glint of pasteurized distrust in their eyes. Yep, they’re in the raw milk camp.
The raw milk – or “real” milk – movement has been gaining steady momentum here in California and around the country. (Now, in CA, raw milk can be legally sold in supermarkets as long as it’s been inspected.) But why are people up in arms? What makes raw milk so much better? Is raw milk even safe?
What is raw milk?
Simply put, raw milk is unpasteurized milk. Pasteurized milk, the kind most people buy at the grocery store, has undergone a heating process that kills bacteria that could be dangerous. Unpasteurized/raw milk has not undergone this heating process, which means that any bacterial organisms present in the milk remain in the milk when you drink it.
Obviously, for the non-raw milk drinker, this throws up an immediate red flag. Surely there must be some benefit? you ask. Well, here you go:
What are the benefits of raw milk?
According to most raw milk advocates, pasteurization/heat treatment destroys a lot of the vitamin C and other vitamins and minerals in milk. With raw milk, you get the full nutritional impact! Secondly, many people who have digestive issues with normal, pasteurized milk can digest raw milk just fine! Oddly enough, many people who are diagnosed lactose intolerant can drink raw milk with no problems.
What are the dangers of raw milk?
Of course, there are also drawbacks that keep many skeptics from making the switch over to raw milk. Raw milk has many bacterial organisms that can make you sick. (The pro-raw milk side usually says, “Well, you just get sick because your immune system isn’t accustomed to the bacteria.” Either way, you can get sick.)
Also, raw milk has – in, albeit, extreme cases – led to paralysis (from the presence of nasty organism campylobacter) and other serious life-threatening health issues.
